What Keeps You Going When Things Get Tough
May 03, 2022
I’m sure you have heard people talking about the Why behind their business and if you haven’t then let me introduce you to the importance of having a strong why behind your big dreams and desires.
Here is the deal, When you know your WHY it will keep you moving forward and motivate you to work harder to accomplish your goals for your dream life. Then why isn't just the reason you do what you do, it's the consistent reminder that keeps you grounded, energized, and focused. It's your cause, your purpose, your motive, and your proof.
Knowing your WHY is not only a way to be successful, but it is the only way to maintain lasting success and have a more powerful blend of creativity and flexibility.
When your WHY goes fuzzy, it becomes much more challenging to support the growth, loyalty, and inspiration that helped drive the initial success.
You will have moments of comparisonitis, you will see mindblowing creativity show up and make you question every color combo, every logo choice, and every business decision that you have made. You might wake up one day and not quite remember why you started this whole thing in the first place. That’s when we all need to get back to the basic why and recharge.
Some people just stumble onto their work and are immediately successful, whereas there are others who have to work a little harder at keeping the momentum going. But with both, there was something that forced the start of a business or life change. There was a spark that got the initial first step toward the dream going, an inspiration that was so strong that it made you want to run in the marathon.
However, if you are like most creative entrepreneurs, I'm pretty sure you want to sprint to keep up with the ones that have been in the race longer. It can be exhausting.
Here is a little reminder that this is a marathon and it's long, drawn-out and there will be peaks and valleys. Keep your stride, breathe and take your time where you need to.
In the entrepreneur world, things can get very tough. There isn’t anyone there to necessarily push you to keep going. It takes digging really deep within yourself and a burning desire to make it all the way. And That is where your why will come in. Your Why will be the golden rule for your life and business.
Your WHY will always keep you grounded and moving forward.
Your initial WHY might be what got you going in the first place but is it strong enough to keep you going when things get tough?
I want to be clear about something, some people will say that money is the why behind their business. Now, don’t get me wrong, money is awesome. I love money too, It can open doors, help buy nice things, pay for your mortgage, your kids' school tuition and so much more but money is a by-product.
What does money mean for you? Does it represent financial independence, relief from debt, and the ability to live anywhere and any way you want to? In that case, money isn’t really your why -- freedom is.
SO let's get into WHY you want to make this dream of yours a reality.
The WHY has to be stronger than the reason to quit.
There are plenty of reasons not to go into business for yourself. It’s risky. You might get caught up in debt. You could bruise your reputation. You might even lose everything.
However, there was something that you saw was missing in your niche that you could do better or in a different way with your own unique spin on it. Or maybe you want to share your story or product that you genuinely believe will change people's lives.
Whatever that reason is, it was stronger than all the reasons not to begin something new, and it’s what you should always go back to if you start to feel lost.
Ask yourself, WHY do I want to start doing this "dream business or life" in the first place?
What is motivating you to go for it? Is it someone, something, a cause that you want to support… what is it?
Then ask yourself WHAT can I do to bring my cause to life? What steps do you need to take to make it a reality?
This is where you will benefit from writing out your big goal of what you want to achieve and breaking it down into micro-goals. When you write it out on paper, your brain is able to visualize it better and you are 50 % More likely to achieve the goal you set out to achieve in the first place..
Next, ask yourself, HOW can I maintain the momentum when things get tough?
When things get tough, this is when you will circle back around to the WHY you wanted to start in the first place.
I want to give you an example to get the ball rolling
My WHY is a few things.
I wanted to start my own business to be of service to others, to have the freedom to make my own choices and to have unlimited time with my family.
My purpose for my business is to coach aspiring creative entrepreneurs, who desire to build something more significant for their families. Leave their current job and create a life of enjoyment and success without the 9-5 grind.
Within my business, I want to help aspiring creatives start exactly where they are at. Who may have fears and need a community of like-minded entrepreneurs to push them out of their box and truly be successful in their desires.
Help them say YES! to their dreams and to find happiness in their success. To motivate and encourage them to be entrepreneurs and believe that they have what it takes to be wildly successful.
Now, to break that down, my why is to have time freedom and ultimately put my family first, then it's to serve others and encourage them to go after their dream life so that they too, can live a life that they love. To me, that is the most important thing and gets me out of bed and inspired every single day.
Everyone's WHY is different. Maybe yours is as simple as you want more time, freedom, or time with your loved ones.
Maybe it's to:
- Bring awareness to a cause you are passionate about.
- Travel more.
- Encourage others.
- Work a few hours a week.
- Be a stay-at-home mom or dad.
Your why is yours. So make sure it is a strong enough why that you are personally connected to. Something that hits you deep into your core. That makes you jump out of bed every day and you strive to make work because that WHY is the most important part of your life.
What motivates you to keep moving?
Ask yourself this question….
What happens if you don’t make it work?
Humans move faster away from pain than they do pleasure. What’s something that scares you if you don’t make your dream life you are working to create, work? An example of that might be: if I don’t make this work, it is back to corporate America working in a job that I absolutely dislike.
What is that one thing that scares you that you want to never go back to?
